Scanning the beaches first thing in the morning when the waster is slick and calm might reveal some of the season’s first pods of migrating tarpon. If you have tarpon fever, you know how amazing these upcoming weeks can be. Tarpon are gearing up for their summer spawn. Typically they will be in pods of 10 to 20, but it’s common to encounter a pod of 50 or more. Beach tarpon fishing has been challenging lately. Early starts make it easier to spot a pod of fish that’s relaxed and willing to eat. This fishing should only improve until the next full moon. Beach snook fishing has been good this week. Anglers fishing with live grunts around barrier island points have been catching big snook. Most of these fish are too big to keep, but some slot-sized fish are around. Time is running out to catch and keep snook; the season closes Monday. Snook have been the best option for anglers fishing Tampa Bay. Many are still holding near creek mouths. However, structures such as bridge pilings and rock jetties are holding the larger slot-sized fish.
