Florida Keys Fishing Report week of 4/23/18

Offshore:
There has been evidence that the Dolphin migration is beginning offshore of Islamorada. The Reef Runner crew got into a bunch of Blackfin Tuna on the Islamorada Hump and also caught some Dolphin. Captain Rick on the Sea Horse had a great catch of Dolphin with thirty in the box at days end. Captain Rick also caught two big Wahoo. Captain Rick Stanczyk out of Bud and Mary’s Marina landed a Swordfish of 600 pounds last week.

Reefs:
The reef has been on fire lately making for lots of good catches. Captain Chuck on the Dee Cee caught Amberjack and King Mackerel one trip last week. Captain Billy Chrisman on his Vera Vita charter boat out of Whale Harbor Marina fished three reef trips last week and got into pretty much every species of fish known to man. One trip they went two for three on Sailfish. On another trip they got into the Yellowtail Snapper big time with a few Mutton and Mangrove Snapper also. On the Vera Vita’s third trip they got into some Kingfish and caught one Dolphin on the reef, but also caught two Wahoo. With the calm seas Captain Juan Garcia took his bay boat out off of the reef and caught a Sailfish for his fare.

Gulf and Bay:
In the near Gulf and the western reaches of Florida bay the Trout action is good and getting better as the weeks pass. There are some Mangrove Snapper in the mix also. And, in the western area of the bay the Tarpon fishing is going on big time. Drifting a Mullet under a float or just putting a fresh chunk on the bottom can provide action with Tarpon and Sharks. Captain Fred out of Smugglers Cove Marina fished the Cape Sable area and got into a good bite of Snook. Then Fred took the long ride home in the Gulf and ran the crab buoys and hit the tripletail hard.

Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
Captain Vinnie Biondoletti out of Bud and Mary’s Marina has been fishing Tarpon evenings and getting the bite on live Mullet. Captain Vinnie also has been backcountry fishing and getting into Jack Crevalle and Pompano. Captain Gary of Ivory Keys charters put his client on Bonefish catching and releasing two Thursday. And of course the Tarpon are thick most everywhere and being pursued on flats and in channels around Islamorada.
