Mangrove snapper have been very cooperative throughout the bay and the tiny sized baitfish currently available are perfect for targeting them. The key to acquiring these baits is to have a cast net with the proper mesh size. I’ve been throwing an eighth-inch glass minnow net with great results. Reducing the hook size has been necessary with the smaller baits in order to fool the keen-eyed snapper. If catching live bait proves difficult, we’ve also had good success using shrimp or frozen squid for snapper. Having a variety of baits often helps in extending a bite.
