Add Sargeant Park To Your Favorites
Most anglers will agree the toughest thing about fishing is finding the time to do it.
My solution to that dilemma is to keep a mental list of places that are close, scenic and active. I keep my tackle stashed in the Jeep, and anytime I find myself with an uncommitted hour, I head for the closest one on the list.
On of my favorite north Tampa “escape hatches” is John B. Sargeant Park, one of the Wilderness Park sites, located 3.5 miles of Fowler Avenue on U.S. 301.
Whenever I’m up in that neck of the woods - or river - the shaded boardwalk of Sargeant Park is always on my mind.
I have my reasons. It’s a one-minute walk from the parking lot to the first cast. And the boardwalk opens onto a 40-foot pier that has a couple of benches and a commanding view of a hole-riddled bend in the Hillsborough River.
As Wilderness Park’s fishing piers go, Sargeant Park’s is one of the smallest and least frequented. Most shore anglers tend to flock to the larger Morris Bridge and Trout Creek riverfront sites, while Sargeant Park is more popular for its uncluttered boat ramp.
I have always held that angling is not as much about the catching as it is about the fishing. And the fishing is never better then when you’re the one doing it. Start your list of “escape hatches” today.
