| ** | The world of fly-fishing for the most part stays the same as far a flies and equipment goes. However, with Saltwater Fly fishing picking up in popularity each year we are starting to see some new Flies, leaders, line and reels coming out on the market. The die-hard mountain trout fly-fisher will stick to the flies and methods that have been use for the past 100 years or so. |
On the other hand the new breed of Saltwater Fly-fishers are much more experimental and not so stuck on old traditions. This brings some very innovative products.
This past June I had one of staff from Fly Fishing in Saltwater Magazine out for a few days of tarpon and flats fishing trip. He pulled out an arsenal of new types of flies that caught my eye. Some were on the market for a short time and other were just about ready to hit the shelves. These flies and materials that I have never seen before.
The day started off with us chasing some tarpon down on Clearwater Beach. Having a problem getting tarpon eat anything for the past two weeks, I had my clients toss every fly pattern that had with me over this two weeks period. I would get some of these tarpon to take a “Cockroach” from time to time -- but it was hit or miss and frankly becoming frustrating, to say the least.
This staff member from the magazine pulled out a fly made by Enrico Puglisi from New York. I have heard of Enrico’s flies but never had the time to order any before the start of this season.
We tied on the new Peanut butter pattern (black and purple) and chased down a pod of tarpon. He put one of these flies on them on the first cast of the day and had a 100 pound tarpon in the air just that fast.
It did not stop there. We shifted over the 8wts and headed for the flats and targeted, snook, reds and sea trout with Enrico’s Pilchard pattern. It seemed as though that with almost every cast we had something on. snook and reds took them fast. sea trout would not leave them alone. I was even more surprised when a 4 pound pompano took the fly.
Another innovative fly comes out of Texas. It’s a newly designed spoon fly made by Boone Spoone, LLC. There are number of colors to chose from. I purchased a few in Gold and Sliver. They work very well on reds and snook with floating line.
Another innovative product that has been out for a few years is the Furled leaders made by Wonderfurl They have a great amount of stretch and are not subject to wind knots.
If you get the chance to try some these new products you wont be disappointed. In fact it might give you the thoughts of your own type of new innovative flies.
Until next month. Tight lines and good fishing.
