Weather has always been a major factor in planning any fishing trip and currently the wind has been our concern.  Finding a lee shoreline sheltered from the wind by any type of land mass has been necessary this past week to enjoy any kind of success.  I’ve used much of the length of Pinellas County’s mainland to my advantage catching fish along our gulf beaches from St. Pete Beach to Sand Key.  Consider the fact that baitfish have a tendency to swim into the wind and the whole equation begins to make sense.  I’ve focused on areas with known bottom structure but have not ignored any concentrations of bird activity.  Understanding the signals the birds give is very helpful in locating actively feeding fish.  Our catches have included Spanish mackerel, little tunny, mangrove snapper, black sea bass, white grunt, and shark.
