The Tampa Bay Times

Well as expected, the snook fishing this past week has been incredible in the North Pinellas County area. Leading up to the big moon phase, the bite was very very reliable with several of the large females being caught. However, the day before and the day of the full moon, the water conditions became very calm, and the skies clear and blue. It made the bite really tough for a couple of days. However after the full moon phase had passed, and the west winds began to blow a bit, the snook began to eat again with even a bigger appetite. We were able to hook 15 snook in the first 20 minutes of a stop along the beach one day this week.  Greenbacks netted in the morning are still my favorite bait of choice. However I have been collecting grunts and squirrelfish from traps as larger offerings to entice the bigger snook to eat. Fishing on the flats for redfish has tapered off a bit during the intense heat we have had. The flats were over 88° at mid day this week, causing redfish to be lethargic and hide deep in the mangroves. A few fish were caught with tremendous effort, finding only a couple of bites each day. Trout and snook are still of the most reliable and productive fishing right now especially on the beach side from Clearwater to Tarpon Springs. Hydration is extremely important when fishing during the heat of the day. Even though there may be a breeze keeping your skin cool, continue to drink plenty of water or other drinks providing electrolytes. Dehydration can sneak up on even the toughest anglers.
