The Tampa Bay Times
May is almost here, and with its arrival the anticipation for the fantastic fishing that accompanies it brews. The beaches that our area is known for provide the perfect setting for some world class fishing over the next month.
Beach going Snook are starting to show up at their typical hot spots for this time of year. Afternoon outgoing tides are you the best chance at hooking some snook. Pass shoals are known for holding schools of snook all summer long. Free-line live pilchards and grass grunts along sand drop offs, cast well up-current and let your bait drift naturally with the tide.
Tarpon are beginning to migrate through the area along our beaches. Over the next couple of weeks their numbers will increase dramatically, it’s time to get some fresh braid on those big spinning reels and purchase a couple spools of leader. The best time to see these fish in a good mood in at daybreak, look for small pods of fish to be slipping slowly along as they make their way south just outside of the swim buoys.
As the water continues to clear up over the next few days with the help of an offshore wind pattern. Look for the bait fish to stack up right close to shore. Follow the pelicans to reveal the location of the schools of pilchards that can often be found along the swash channel.
