The Tampa Bay Times
Redfish and snook are feeding aggressively at times through ought Tampa Bay. With a lack of any cold fronts in our area over the last several days water temperatures are on the rise and fsh are much more active than a week ago.
Redfish numbers are on the rise in the bay as we’ve seen a definite increase in the population over the last couple of months. Small schools of redfish can be found cruising just about any flat that’s supporting a decent mullet population right now. Super low a.m. tides this past week made for some tricky fishing for the reds however. When dealing with skinny water reds it best to stay as far away from them as possible. Cut ladyfish, threadfin and pinfish are great options under these conditions.
Targeting mangrove shorelines near to the many small creeks that flow out to the bay, the afternoon snook bite was outstanding last week. Plenty of snook in the 20 to 25 inch range have made their way out of winter holding areas and can be whipped up into a frenzy at times.
Live pilchards, the top bait this time of year, are abundant at times in Tampa bay but can disappear overnight. The Skyway bridge is the one constant in the bait game, however range markers and deeper dredge areas near the other bridges will hold good concentrations of pilchards at times.
