With a record-breaking February behind us, cooler air temperatures this week will help keep the water at a perfect temperature. It was what we needed to keep things in balance. Bait has been hanging on the bridges in Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg all year. Look for an influx of bait schools to start making their way onto the flats. Trout fishing continues to be amazing, and it might just hit its peak this month. The bigger size, usually females, are in spawn and will eat anything in sight. With the warmer weather, trout will start to chew on the incoming bait. Look for areas that have glass minnows and white bait, and work the edges of the flats. March is usually the turning point where snook make their way out of the winter holes, but it has happened early this year. Snook are everywhere and if you are lucky enough to have greenbacks, they’re easy to catch. Once the schools of greenbacks become big enough on the flats and mangrove line, snook will stay in these locations.
