This spring brought many surprises the past two weeks for our clients. We were rewarded with giant red grouper, blackfin tuna and numerous kingfish. Some impressive sized lane snapper and sea bass were also brought in from the deep gulf waters. Our arsenal consisted of frozen Spanish sardines, cut squid and long octopus tentacles, and live pinfish, grunts and squirrel fish were added to our mix. We would throw a flatline (a bait-free line) off the back of the boat. This seemed to get the attention of the pelagic fish. Blackfin tuna, kingfish and sharks were the species we landed for the most part. There were scattered reports of sailfish hooked this past weekend. We are still traveling quite deep into the gulf to get a good day of bottom fishing. The consistent spots seem to be at least 40 miles from shore. We’re hoping the fish are slowly moving east, since shallower depths are just not producing the same results. Every cold front or weather system that comes through will affect the direction and timing of fish migrations.
