Saltwater Angler Magazine's 4th Annual Filthy Pelican Sheepshead Invitational

Get your scrapers and start shucking! It’s sheepshead time again.

On February 12 – 13th, Saltwater Angler Magazine will be hosting its 4th Annual Filthy Pelican Sheepshead Invitational. And by “invitational” we mean anybody that loves trying their luck at capturing that pesky striped convict with the sightly teeth. The event will be held along the waters of Tampa Bay at the Tampa Harbour Yacht Club located at 5200 W. Tyson St. in Tampa.

In an effort to shine light on conservation issues directly concerning our waters and coastlines, Saltwater Angler Magazine has partnered with Tampa Bay Watch (tampabaywatch.org), a non-profit group committed to the protection and restoration of the Tampa Bay Estuary. This event will help raise money to ensure that our Tampa Bay estuaries will remain healthy and productive now and for years to come. After last years tournament total donations by Saltwater Angler and the Filthy Pelican Sheepshead Invitational reached over $6,000.

The mandatory captain’s meeting will be held Friday, February 12th at 6:30 P.M. This is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy music, drinks and food provided by Jimbo’s Pitt BBQ. Specific rules and/or rule changes will be discussed at the meeting. All participants must pick up their official tournament number at the captain’s meeting to be eligible to compete.

Fishing will begin Saturday, February 13th at 6:30 A.M. when anglers battle for the single heaviest sheepshead in an effort to take home the top prize of $2,500. Cash and prizes will be awarded through 20th place along with a token prize for last place. There will be a Lady Angler and a Youth (under 12yrs) division so everyone is invited to join in on the fun. Entry fee is $45 per angler (pre-registered). Participants are allowed to launch and fish anywhere between Hudson and Boca Grande on the Gulf Coast. All anglers weighing a fish must return to Tampa Harbour Yacht Club by 4:00 P.M. for the official weigh-in and awards ceremony.

Following the weigh-in there will be food, music and drinks and is also open to the public.

Last year’s event saw one local angler, Chris Wiggins, tip the scales with a 12.5-lb sheepshead earning him nearly $3,000. This fish was one pound shy of the state record. Things are in the works to present a very special prize to anyone that tops this tournament record fish.

Public Invited to Mote Marine's Red Tide Forum on Feb. 10th

In 2007, the state of Florida created a special grants program to support projects that would study ways to control and potentially lessen the effects of Florida's red tide on coastal communities. Called the "Red Tide Control and Mitigation Project," the competitive grants program funded 12 research studies and disbursed more than $1.5 million between 2007 and 2009 to explore environmentally acceptable techniques or technologies for potential control or mitigation of red tide blooms and their affects in Florida.

On Feb. 10, an overview of these grant-funded projects, research results and current information about red tide control and mitigation strategies will be presented to the public during a free public forum at Mote Marine Laboratory. The forum will include a question and answer session.

The grants program defined "control and mitigation" as projects or efforts designed to minimize the size, intensity or duration of Florida red tide blooms caused by Karenia brevis or reduce the environmental, economic, social or public health impacts of future red tides in Florida. The 12 funded projects include:

Four focused on red tide control
Four focused on red tide and human health
Three focused on education and outreach

One focused on the economic issues surrounding Florida's red tide
Grant awards were made to the Georgia Institute of Technology, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, University of South Florida, Smithsonian Institution, Mote Marine Laboratory, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Florida Department of Health, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Les Films de L'Espigaou and the University of Florida. For summaries and updates on the funded projects, go to http://research.myfwc.com/features/view_article.asp?id=27877.

The projects were chosen by a nine-member Red Tide Control and Mitigation Panel that included members from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Solutions To Avoid Red Tide (START), Florida's departments of health, agriculture and consumer services and environmental protection, Lee and Collier county governments, the University of South Florida, the Sierra Club and Sanibel Sea School.

The public forum is part of a larger workshop for the science and stakeholder communities taking place Feb. 9-11 at Mote Marine Laboratory. The 2.5-day workshop will bring the red tide science community and stakeholders together to discuss the results of current projects and address the five-year harmful algal bloom plan in place as part of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance. The workshop will also include discussion of the latest global efforts in control and mitigation and Florida's role.

Billfish Expo 2010 coming Feb. 13th

One Day Fishing Extravaganza Benefits The Billfish Foundation & IGFA

MIAMI, Fla., -- A rare chance to mingle with a gathering of two dozen of the world’s finest billfishing captains, anglers and marine scientists -- and to hear them share some of their most highly guarded billfish secrets -- takes place at Billfish Expo 2010, Saturday, February 13.
The one day billfishing extravaganza will be held on the third floor ballroom of the Waterfront Miami Marriot Biscayne Bay, 1633 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

To help preserve the future of billfishing, funds from the expo will go to two of marine conservation’s leading non-profits The Billfish Foundation and the International Game Fish Association (IGFA).

Hosted by Capt. Skip Smith, a board member of TBF, said the one day “How-To” educational billfishing extravaganza features captains and anglers “who have combined in catching and releasing over 100,000 billfish, achieved over 250 IGFA world records and,” he added with a grin, “have won way too much prize money.”

Smith said, “These speakers belong to a special club of anglers where the members don’t talk too much, too loud or too often about themselves but when they do, anglers stop to listen.
“We’re limiting the audience to just 1,000 so we can keep an informal setting for one-on-one opportunities and the speakers can share more insights on billfishing topics.”
Smith added that following the day long event The Billfish Foundation will present its Annual Tag & Release Awards beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the same ballroom.

Along with television fishing show host and IGFA Hall of Famer Mark Sosin the event’s emcee, Smith gave a run down of the scheduled topics and speakers.

They include:
• Sailfish: Trolling: Ron Hamlin & Dave Fields
• Sailfish: Live Bait: Ray Rosher & Bouncer Smith
• Circle Hooks: How They Work and How to Rig: Bouncer Smith & Skip Smith
• White Marlin: Bubba Carter & Dave Fields
• Black Marlin & Wiring Techniques: Peter Wright, Bo Jenyns & Scott Levin
• Daytime Swordfishing: Matt Tambor, Richard Stanczyk & Josh Brown
• Angling: Rob Ruwitch & Raleigh Werking
• Satellite Tagging and Other Science: Professor Arthur Mariano

• Using Your Electronics: Karl Anderson, Steve Lassley, Pete Groesbeck,
• Blue Marlin: Bubba Carter, Gene Vanderhoek, Kevin Nakamura, Steve Lassley, Peter Groesbeck, Mike Lemon

• Special guest speaker Chris Fischer on his new National Geographic Television Series “Expedition Great White”.

Smith said many more special guests, TV fishing personalities and speakers will be in attendance along with sponsor exhibits, merchandise marts, raffles, drawings for trips and more.
Tickets are $125 per person, if registered before Feb. 1, and $145 after that date.
For additional information on Billfish Expo please call Smith or Tom Fitzpatrick at the One More Bite Production’s office at 954-531-7985, or register at billfishexpo.com.
