Our Fish Picture of the Week!

Dear CapMel,

On June 14th, I had the privilege of taking my dad on an offshore grouper trip with a fellow member of your site. We were able to contact him through the forums and set up a trip. We never lucked into a keeper grouper, but I did manage to land a personal best kingfish!

While preparing to drop baits down for grouper, I spied the king circling 20 ft beneath the boat and lowered my bait down slowly. Midway down it was hit, and the drag-screaming fight was on. The king taped out to 43" and around 23 lbs, and the funniest part is that it hit a grouper rig - 6/0 circle hook, 80 lb leader, 5 oz lead and 60 lb braid, on a heavy rod with the drag locked down. Add to that the fact that the water temp was 86 degrees! It just goes to show that you never can guess what might bite when you're offshore. My dad and I made a memory to last forever.

Thanks for the website and forums! Keep up the great information!

Though it's summer, the big kings are still in our offshore waters -- and Dan found this beauty.  As his prize, Dan will receive a "Capt. Mel MirrOlure assortment" of some of the most  productive, fish-catching plugs to share.
