Monsoonal rains will bring a change to our local fishing scene. The drought we’ve been in is unusual this time of year. Freshwater helps to keep the shallows cool and fish active, and will put a little color in the water which can improve the attitude of finicky fish. Gin clear water is a phrase often used by anglers, and although it paints a pretty picture, fish are often much more wary and selective when visibility is that good. Although beach tarpon fishing has been a bit off this summer, the beach snook bite has been very good. Catch and release action on large snook is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of summer fishing. With populations on the rise, targeting snook in the 10 to 15-pound class has been a daily occurrence. Fishing with live free-lined grass grunts along the beach swash channel and passes has worked very well. Trout and flounder remain on the list this week if the winds cooperate. Beach side structures such as jetties and mitigation reefs are holding plenty of trout. Free-line and or lightly weight live pilchards over the structure and along the rocks when targeting trout. Add more weight and fish the edges of the structure for the flounder.
