Live shrimp have become the go-to bait of choice. Even though the air temperatures seem warm lately, the water temperatures remain cool. During the cooler months our typical baitfish tend to leave the area. The lack of baitfish this time of year turns most inshore species attention to shrimp and crabs as their food source. While crabs can be very effective as bait, they are usually more difficult to obtain on a regular basis. Live shrimp, however, can be purchased readily at any bait shop. Artificial lure enthusiasts should also be aware of the predator fish’s focus on crustaceans and make their selections imitate a shrimp or crab. Color choices should look natural in ranges of browns and greens and into reds. Moving the lure slowly allowing it to occasionally bump along the bottom will also make it appear natural and draw a strike.
