Thunderstorms will be the chief concern for those thinking of fishing today. The forecast is for breezy conditions with a good chance of rain. This weather pattern should last for the next few days and may be cause for concern for offshore fishermen. I talked with Captain Bill Fehl about how he has been doing with gag and red grouper. He said red grouper haven’t been plentiful close to shore. There have been spotty catches throughout the area but no real concentrations of fish. Nearly 30 miles out, he found better fishing for reds in one area to the southwest. The gag grouper that we normally find in deeper water this time of year haven’t been in their normal summer haunts. Bill decided to dive on shallower reefs. During one dive he found a fairly good bunch of gags. However, they were much closer to shore than expected. Bill also said those gags appeared to be what he called “resident fish.” The good news is that when you catch one gag, you can usually catch several. Mangrove snapper fishing is about the best ever. Mangroves are plentiful on just about every piece of structure and are very hungry.
