The sheepshead bite continues to remain very good. The deeper the water the better and most sheep’s are being caught north of Homosassa in 18 to 20 feet of water over natural structure or some public reefs west of Crystal River. There has also been some hogfish and grunts caught in this depth too. Live shrimp on a knocker rig is the best bait. The shallow rocks west of Homosassa have a few sheepshead but most of them are holding blue fish, spanish mackerel, grunts and trout.
Inshore the trout bite is very good. Depending on tide is where the trout will be. On low water the creek mouths and deeper parts of their channels is where the fish will. When it’s very low like this past week it will concentrate the fish but getting to them can be the tricky part. On the incoming tide bars, points and shallow passes are the best places to fish. Shallow running plugs, soft plastics or free lined live shrimp will get the bite. Sight casting for redfish has been fun as of this week with the warm weather. An angler can do this alone but it’s so much better with a fishing buddy especially one that knows how to pole a skiff! This is the best way to approach skinny water wary redfish. The new moon incoming high tide will start in around noon this weekend.
