Many types of fish will be sought after this month on the Nature Coast. May will bring in the first real warm days before the heat sets in. Warm weather brings a new batch of pelagic species to pass by for the anglers delight on our coast. The first push of tarpon will make their way south of the Homosassa River. Traditionally this is a fly anglers hallowed ground where record fish are caught. These anglers put much effort into getting close to the fish and work very hard with each other to make sure that everyone gets a shot at the tarpon, as not to spook the fish. Cobia are showing up around the shallow rocks and deeper. The best way to catch a cobia is to be prepared when one shows up. I can’t count how many times my charters have caught or lost nice cobia on light tackle intended for trout. A heavy spinning outfit with 30lb. braid and 60lb. leader will land a good cobia with out the anxiety of fighting one a light rod. Have the rod ready with a live pinfish hanging over the side of the boat ready to cast or live pinfish in a bucket hooked ready to throw. Drifting along for trout out in 8 to 10 feet of water one could show up at anytime or on purpose motoring up to some structure. In the 30 foot and out range kingfish are being caught, Diamond jigs and free lined pinfish are getting the bite. High incoming tide will be in the afternoon this weekend. W
