After the first day of scallop season, things are off to a slow start. Not many were brought back to the dock. Many factors could be the cause, from new moon high tides. lots of rain and change of salinity and over harvesting.Time will tell if the scallop masses are in deep water or not here at all. Mangrove snapper are in good numbers around the nearshore rocks. Free lined live shrimp is the best bait. There are also grunts, spanish mackerel and a few keeper gag grouper mixed in. For trout head out early and use cork rigs with glow soft plastic tails about 24″ under the float. Best areas have been in front of the Ft. Island Beach, near the Bird Rack and the north side of the Chassahowitzka channel. Redfish on the incoming tide has been good but there are a lot of short fish. Look for shorelines with jumping mullet to find them. High incoming tide will be in the late afternoon this weekend.
