The over cast conditions can make it hard for sight casting rolling tarpon but south of the Homosassa River the season is doing very well with anglers of all rods ( fly & spin ) catching plenty of fish. Expect the tarpon to be around till scallop season starting in July. Good baits for the spinning rods have been the D.O.A. Bait Busters and live crabs.
The trout bite has been very good on the outgoing tide near the outer keys around Ozello and Mason Creek. D.O.A. glow jerk baits with a Owner 3/0 bait style hook will get the big trout. Just ask Capt. Jody Johnson of the Homosassa Guides Association who took team Trotter Camp to first place with big trout this past weekend at the Big Fish Cobia Tournament out of MacRae’s . More trout can also be caught offshore of marker #2 from the Homosassa channel using MirrOlure LiL. Johns in watermelon red flake with a 1/8th oz. red jig head. On these deeper flats with the same jig some keeper black sea bass will be mixed in with the trout. Some anglers are also catching keeper gag grouper in the same 12 foot depth. Shallow running plugs and live pinfish are the best baits. Red fishing on the last part of the incoming tide with live shrimp or pinfish will get the bite. Outside rocky points with jumping mullet are the spots to try first. High incoming tide this weekend will be in the morning. W
