June can be a very dry month and the start of our rainy season happens near the end of it. Having said that good rainfall can help out on the inshore waters from catching fish to gathering scallops. Rain will help sweeten the Gulf waters by changing the salinity, cooling the water and providing nutrients from freshwater rivers to help shellfish like one of my favorites oysters. Trout fishing can be tough during the summer months but an angler can capitalize on a overcast rain cooled day by using a popping cork rig with a jig. Trout are low light feeders so clouds, wind and rain will increase the chances of catching trout. My best inshore summer spots are east end of Chassahowitzka Bay, just west of Long Point and east of the Scallop Rack. The rocks in 5 to 8 feet of water there are a few grunts, spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper and flounder. Remember the new size for flounders is 14″ and 5 per angler. Red snapper are coming to the dock from the 60 to 70 foot mark so plan your offshore run when the trout fishing is not good, watch your weather. Incoming high tide will be in the afternoon this weekend.
