The big summer kick-off for scallop season starts this Sunday July 1st for our area. For all regulations regarding scallops please go to www.myfwc.com, some of the areas have changed. Finding scallops in Homosassa is as easy as looking for the mass of boats north or south of the channel. Some of the local reports have put the scallops in deeper water maybe because of the heavy rains. Remember these tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable time, have your vessel safety checked  by the U.S.C.G. Auxiliary ( they do not write tickets, the will help you avoid one, maybe save your life ) have your vessel packed and ready before you launch, designate a sober captain and secure all trash on board so it does not blow over board into the water. If this seems like allot of work, hire a local guide.

The inshore bite has picked up for redfish. The mullet are key to finding fish, live shrimp and pinfish have been the best bait. As the incoming tide peaks out in the backcountry gold spoons with weedgaurds have been working well. There is plenty of floating turtle grass and it is natural this time of year for there to be plenty of it. The backcountry has less of this grass because the many keys on the outside edge block it from coming all the way in. There are a few trout being caught jigging near the bottom around the scallop rack and Gomez Rocks. A full moon high incoming tide will be in the afternoon this weekend so the best scalloping will be in the morning.
