The wind has been as strong as I can remember in July except for a hurricane. The heavy rain and strong wind has created a decent inshore trout bite that I’ve been capitalizing on because it just has not been safe to run offshore. The rain and wind has cooled our local flats water temperatures. The areas that I’ve had the best luck at are large creek mouths behind Mangrove Point, St. Martins River and Mason Creek. A large oval popping cork with a 24 ” leader and 1/8thoz. red jig head is the best rig, then put a bourbon MirrOlure LiL’ John on to get the bite. High outgoing tide is best.
Red fishing on the incoming tide has been very good using live pinfish. Outside points and long keys with rocky shorelines are the best spots. I would think if this weekend the wind calms down the nearshore rocks should have a good mangrove snapper bite. Remember to call ahead to make sure your favorite bait shop has shrimp. High incoming tide will be in the afternoon this weekend.
