Looking forward to this weekend with some warm weather. Water temps are still in the upper 50’s in the Gulf and mid way up our coastal rivers. On the nearshore rocks sheepshead are your best target. High profile rocks and large structure hold the most fish. Fresh shrimp on the bottom are the best bait. When I get a bite from a sheepshead, to keep them interested I’ll pull my bait a little across the bottom and the next time you feel them pick it it up is the time to set the hook.
On the outside edge look for trout sunning on the shallow rocks around the keys during the incoming tide. This water will heat up best during a mid day high tide. Shallow running plugs and soft plastic jerk baits work best. In the Nature Coast Rivers there is still a good black drum bite mix in with some sheepshead, trout and small redfish. Live shrimp is the best bait. For some good fun action there are plenty of lady fish in the head water areas of the spring fed rivers. This is a good opportunity to teach a young angler how to use a lure or hone your fly casting and fishing skills.
