March has come and gone.  It’s definitely springtime for inshore flats anglers in West Central Florida

The inshore kayak fishing action has been on a yo-yo.   John Veil got on good action for four days.  The next two days after that:  Pretty bad.    The fish went on an evening routine.    A friend who stayed out late afternoon did well.   The morning bite:   Just dreadful.

Out on the water, things have been so very good then very bad that it has been difficult to figure out what is going on some of the time.   When things are good, they are really good.   Redfish and speckled trout are the best options.   The oddity in feeding behavior: When the fish can be located and when they will eat.   For redfish, that is not anything new but the behavior of speckled trout, particularly in areas where they would normally be so easy to target is something that is keeping people up nights.

The trout still like the 12 Fathom SlamR.   The Redfish have shifted to being more interested in the gold Mullets, “redfish” Mullet or Mirrodines.  They are getting more aggressive with the arriving baitfish schools.   April should be the easiest month of the year to catch a redfish.   It should make for interesting trips because trout action should hit peak anytime now as well.    The perfect mix of water to air temperature, the opportunities should become outstanding for most of the month of April.

April 27 is Kayak Fishing Skool!   The topic is: Beginners to Kayak Fishing.   If you have someone who is interested in kayak fishing, this is the annual session that concentrates on the basics for beginners.

April 29:  The Captain Mel Classic.   Our seventh year.   Cheap buy in ($30).  We have fun.    It is a great day to raise money for a local charity and have some fun with the fishing aspects.   New for 2017:  Pompano.  The two longest pompano (through all divisions) will be winners.    You will get two pompano jigs in your supplies.   A Silly Willy with an Uncle Neil teaser.   And a Nekkid Ball jig.

There are openings in the schedule and I would be happy to get your outing scheduled!

As always: Be careful out there!
