April is upon us and so is the beutiful weather! Yes we have had our share of rain lately and the winds have been hit or miss but the fish still have to eat. There has been a lot of run off of fresh water into the bays that has slowed the bite in some areas but if you are persistant and keep moving always looking for bait, mullet schools, rays, and other signs of life you can get on a good redfish and trout bite. The rain and strong winds have clouded up the water making sight fishing tough to impossible in some areas but it has began clearing up. I suggest moving to a top water bait. My clients have done well with top water lately as well as spoons and spinner baits for reds. Noise, flash, and vibration will usually get the fishes attention!

Spanish mackerel have arrived and nice catches have been reported throughout the bay. Trolling or casting a variety of artificial biats will easily fill a cooler! Stop by a local tackle shop and they will be happy to get you hooked up with everything you will need. Also, don’t forget to give me a call, usually in the evenings is best, and I’ll share with you how and what I use to target the Spanish.

Cobia fishing has been hit or miss due to the ever chanigng weather and water temperature changes. However, there have been several nice fish caught up and down the beach from boats and off the piers. As the weather stabilizes and continues to warm the Cobia fishing should get better. Big reds and sheepshead are in the pass and offer steady action as long as it’s not to rough.

If flyfishing is your thing now is a great time to knock the dust off that gear and get out and target the Spanish and Cobia! Spanish are a blast on fly and the Cobia could be a fish of a lifetime if you are lucky enough to land one on fly!
