Wow, has it been hot. The weather and the fishing is on fire! July’s forecast barring any bad weather should be a great month to enjoy the beaches and waterway’s surrounding Panama City and Panama City Beach. Off the beach the water is absolutely beautiful. All types of marine life can be spotted cruising around. Bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, huge spotted eagle rays, a wide variety of shark, and even a manatee now and then can be seen while out enjoying the day.

This time of year it pays to get up early or go out later in the day to catch your fish. The heat can affect the bite not to mention limit most people’s ability to stay out to long. If you have children or the elderly out fishing be careful and pay close attention for sign’s of overheating. Be sure to stay hydrated and put up shade if you can.

Nearshore, the king bite has been good. My clients and I are getting an early start and have been free-lining cigar minnows. Not only will you catch some Kings, Spanish mackerel, and bonita, you may even get lucky and hook into a Sailfish!

Shark fishing has also been great! Panama City is home to many different species of shark and they are a blast to catch on light tackle.

The tarpon bite has been great on fly or spin! Clients have been doing extremely well  taking advantage of the clear water spotting fish long before they get near the boat in order to set up for the cast. My space in July for tarpon trips is very limited, so if you have been dreaming about hooking into a tarpon give me a call.

In on the flats the fish are in their summer pattern’s as the heat of the summer kicks in. Start out early and plan to fish late in the day and into the evening to catch trout and redfish. Top water is always a good bet, followed by soft plastics, twitch bait’s, and spoons. Work areas with good tidal movements and look for sign’s of life. Birds, bait pods, and mullet schools are all great indicators that fish will be around.

Sight fishing has been awesome with the water clarity. Up on the flats, out in the bay, definitely off the beaches has been awesome. It’s nothing to look over into over 20’ of water and see the bottom.
