The action, if you pick the right spot, is there to be had. Red Tide is here, so avoid areas that have it in any concentration. Basically, it hasn’t entered Tampa Bay so far so you can concentrate efforts inside the bay. What to target? We have it all inside the bay so it is your choice. At the end of summer I am still doing combination trips. Sunrise for trout and redfish. After the sun gets up, I hit pompano holes. Trout is a main choice, I use topwater lures at sunrise. This tempts the biggest trout. Once the sun is up jigs are also a fine choice to catch trout. Pompano are caught in the deeper holes, 9 feet or more. If you are not in the right spot, you won’t catch them. Use a pompano jig (yellow) with a fly teaser (pink). Bump this combination, loop-knotted together, up and down off the bottom. Trout and pompano both provide good meat to make fish spread. Of legal size: You can keep four trout and you can keep six pompano. My next column will be on fish spread for Oct. 8.
