Water temperatures are on a slow, steady decline due to daily rain. Redfish remain top targets in the northern part of our region in the Intracoastal Waterway and Old Tampa Bay. New moon tides and a northeast wind this week have helped pull some extra water out of the bay and Intracoastal. Lower tides will have redfish, snook, trout and mackerel condensed in slightly deeper water. Hordes of baitfish will be drawn out of the shallows during the lower tides to these same holding spots as well, making for a perfect feeding scenario when the tide is moving. Target channel edges, pothole or sand bottom on the outer edges of the flats as well as deep side dropoff around the many spoil islands that dot the Intracoastal. Although live bait can potentially lead you to a big day, these scenarios are tailor-made for fan casting walking-style baits such as topwater plugs and subsurface twitch baits as long as the floating grass isn’t bad.
