Offshore winds the past week cleaned beach waters to that pretty shade of blue we often have this time of year. The swash channel is full of life as schools of finger mullet, whiting and threadfin herring go in and out with the tide, and schools of pre-spawn snook can be seen from afar. Fishing has been good for snook and trout targeting barrier island points, rock jetties and the beach swash channel. Using a combination of live-grass grunts and pilchards on the strong part of the incoming tide has kept the rods bent until the tide slows. We’ve been using light rods and reels spooled with 10-pound braid, topped with a 6-foot, 30-pound flouro leader and finished off with a 3/0 circle hook. This ensures you’ll be able to apply enough pressure to land larger fish quickly while still being able to fool the fish in clear water. Beach tarpon fishing is heating up. Afternoon fishing has been best. Concentrating on the tide change has allowed anglers to spot slow-moving pods of southbound fish. Live crabs soaked around the edges almost always draws a strike.
