This year has had the best pompano fishing I have seen. It is still going on. The most underutilized species in the Gulf of Mexico, pompano are good fighters, and good to eat. It is pretty easy to get into a school of pompano if you know where to find them. Pompano fishing is primarily jigging. You can catch them other ways but if you don’t have and use pompano jigs and teasers you won’t catch as many as you possibly can. The themes are pink, yellow and gold. I use a yellow jig loop knotted to a pink teaser. The teaser is a small fly. I build flash into my teasers. Working the jig/teaser is quite simple: It needs to be bouncing on the bottom. Areas of water depth greater than 10 feet, the best place to locate pompano. Those options are bridges, Gulf passes and areas with sandy where there is good current. Hooked, they put up the best fight I know for any fish that size. Minimum size on pompano is 11 inches (limit is six a day. I won’t keep one under 13 inches.
