Pompano have returned to the interior of Tampa Bay. They are among the best-eating fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Tackle choices are based on “what else you might hook.” Black drum and cobia are regularly caught fishing for pompano, so I would recommend medium spinning gear rather than light or heavy. Lure choices are aplenty. The first choice for most pompano anglers is the pompano jig/teaser setup. This is Silly Willy, Doc’s or Krazy jigs, and the teaser is a small fly loop-knotted to the jig. Lure color is up to you, but my first choice is a yellow jig and a pink teaser. The best place to locate pompano is on the pilings of the major bridges. Fish close to the structure and make sure your lure is bouncing off the bottom. Pompano fishing is an active “jigging” activity, and you will get more strikes by making your lure jump up off the bottom then sink back down and hit it again. Most strikes occur when the jig is on the bottom.
