High midday temperatures are keeping the waters warm. However, fishing has been fantastic. Bait has exploded all over the north Pinellas flats. This influx of bait has redfish schooling and roaming the flats, foraging more often in open water over the flats. Chumming hard in the vicinity of the usual hangouts can help find fish. Watch for them to boil under an offering of chummed sardines. Once a few fish get excited, usually the rest aren’t far behind. Free-lining or fishing under a cork over grass flats and potholes has produced great numbers of fish in all sizes. Pinfish are working well also, often attracting bigger fish. Snook are still hanging around the beaches and rock jetties, mostly smaller males. The bigger females are making their way back inside the passes after spawning, staging along the inside of the barrier islands and interior beach areas. Once again, look for high concentrations of baits forming dark shadows when over sand. Groups of snook are typically close by. Fish directly in these bait schools with a slightly larger sardine or pinfish.
