Offshore:
Another frontal boundary moved through the Islamorada area last week with strong winds bringing very cool temperatures. These conditions are the norm for this time of year making for very little or no offshore fishing. We get a front passing through the neighborhood about every four to seven days in winter, with some being mild and others being wild. Look for reports of Blackfin Tuna catches and some deep Snapper fishing when the weather moderates.
Reefs:
The reef is arguably the most popular place to fish in winter with a short running time and the cold does not affect the fish off the reef as much as it does the fish in the shallower waters. Guides fish the ten to twenty foot patches inside the reef proper. Captain Jeremy P fished the patches last week and got into Grouper, Snapper, Hogfish, Porgy and Jacks. Captain Max Gaspeny had a client catch a Permit on the patches. Sailfish action has remained very good as attested to by the gang on the Dee Cee with Captain Chuck Shimmelman, releasing two Sails and getting one King Mackerel. Captain Paul on the Reef Runner had a few good days catching King Mackerel.
Gulf and Bay:
There were only a couple of days fished in the open waters of the Gulf this past week with the strong wind the others. Tripletail reports came from captains’ Matt Bellinger and Juan Garcia. A few guides fished the Mackerel, but reports of water temperatures in the low sixties and of very muddy waters made for only fair catches of the Spanish Mackerel. Some skiff guides poled through shallow bay waters and found fish in potholes and moats on the lee side of islands and did well with Snook, Redfish, Drum, Sheepshead and Snapper.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
Flamingo reports told us of decent catches despite the inclement conditions. Captain John Gargan and others fished Flamingo and found great action on Snapper, Drum and there have been lots of Sheepshead in the mix. Captain Tim Klein caught Snook and permit out in the Cape Sable area. And as usual, there have been Seatrout, Ladyfish and Jacks in play also.
