Offshore:
Not yet! The big influx of Dolphin is not here yet. There have been a few reports of Bluewater Dolphin catches though. Captain Brian Cone out of Robbie’s Marina on Lower Matecumbe Key found some nice gaffer school Dolphin in the eight to ten pound size twenty two miles offshore on a relatively calm day last week. Otherwise the Blackfin Tuna are biting on the Islamorada Hump. Captain Travis on the Indigenous out of Bud and Mary’s Marina caught a couple of keeper Swordfish last week.
Reefs:
Most charters and private boats are staying close to the reef and having some great action. The Yellowtail Snapper bite is great and there have been some nice Mutton Snapper caught also. On the Kay K IV they weighed a Mutton of 18 pounds. Captain Wes King on the Expedition got into the Yellowtail and caught a big Barracuda and a Permit. On the Tiki they caught two Blackfin Tuna weighing 20 and 25 pounds just outside the reef. And There are still lots of Amberjack being caught by reef Anglers and some African Pompano too. Captain Paul on the Reef Runner is still doing well catching King Mackerel.
Gulf and Bay:
Not any word from guys in the Gulf recently. But just adjacent to the Gulf in Florida Bay there is good action for Tarpon and Sharks. Also, in the bay the Seatrout action is very good. Drifting the off-color water and bouncing jigs is the ticket to success. Look for Mangrove Snapper to take baits around Islands in the ditches.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
Captain Joe Gargan on his “Charlie Boy” bay boat has been having his way with the Snook, Reds and Trout in the Flamingo area. With Tarpon time upon lots of guides are in full “Tarpon Mode”. The Tarpon bite can be inconsistent, but the bite is on as water temperatures are around eighty degrees and the Mullet are thick all over the area. Captain Juan Garcia has been getting the Tarpon bite mostly in darkness. Captain Skip Nielson reported his customer releasing six Bonefish one trip last week.
