June is here and the water clarity off the beaches is fantastic. It’s gin clear and everything is biting. This time of year sharks, tarpon, kings, pompano, and big jacks are routinely targeted with live bait and artificial lures and everyone can get in on the action. Fish are being caught from boats, kayaks, in the surf, and off the pier! If you would like some specifics on tackle or techniques for a specific species, give me a call or contact a local tackle store.
Inshore, up on the flats and in the bays the water is still clearing up from all the recent rain but it won’t be long and sight fishing will be back in full swing! We have had a good speckled trout bite for the last several weeks but its consisted mainly of smaller fish. I have been primarily targeting them with live bait and sub surface twitch baits. However, early and later in the evening the top water action has been good as well and usually produces larger fish!
The redfish bite has been good overall. Some days they seem to eat all day and my clients have been putting some crazy numbers in the boat followed by several days of having to work hard for just a few. We have been primarily using gold spoons and small soft plastics. I look for water that has a little color to it and work the grass lines during the higher tides and concentrate around the creeks and bayou’s on strong falling tides. Even though a lot of the fish lately have been on the small side, usually under 5 pounds, they are still a blast on light tackle!
It’s also a fantastic time of year to fly fish, so if you have been waiting, come on down. There are plenty of different species of fish to target on the flats and off the beaches! If you find yourself here on vacation without your gear, no problem, I have everything you need. From top of the line Sage “Salt” rods paired with Sage 6000 series reels to hand tied flies for whatever you would like to target.
Nearshore, the Kings, Bonita, and Red Snapper bite has been on fire. Trolling or free-lining live bait has been producing some excellent action along with an assortment of artificial lures.
“PLEASE SHARE” As a reminder to everyone that may be cruising in their boat or jet ski just off the beach for the next several months, please be aware of guides and locals that are targeting a variety of fish that swim close to the beach. So please, be courteous. If you see what looks like a flats boat anchored within a hundred yards or so just off the beach, usually with anglers in some type of casting platform or tower, give them a wide berth. These fishermen are spending a lot of money and many hours on the water waiting to get a shot at a fish of a lifetime! Believe me, it will be greatly appreciated.
