We are back to great action on topwater lures for larger trout. Post hurricane, with cooler water temperatures and shorter daylight hours, and less floating grass, the trout are aggressive again. It is a thrill to watch fish strike your lure. Everyone has a favorite topwater lure. Tie them on to your rod and reel, rigged with a fluorocarbon leader. Action is best early morning or in the evening. Topwater action is regularly tailing off by 9 a.m. You should target areas about 2 feet deep with thick turtle grass bottom. Make long casts and work the lure appropriately. For best results, do short jabs that move the lure just a few inches. Vary your retrieve with pauses. Trout will crash or slurp the lure and hook themselves. Bend down the barbs on all topwater lure hooks. With proper fighting technique you won’t lose fish and if you get a hook in your hand or clothing, you can remove it with little effort. I use pliers to crush the barbs down on my hooks when I pull a lure out of the packaging.
