What’s happenin’ in the upper stretches of Tampa Bay?
Cool overnight temperatures have sent even more fish traveling the distance up the Bay. But, action in the shallows has not been the best ticket. Those great locations in a foot of water have been “ghost towns” for activity, something that will change with time. Going to darker bottom or deeper areas has paid off.
Redfish and trout are the best options. Drum are around in the canals. Pompano are pretty much done for the winter. Redfish numbers have probably been better in other locations around the region but there are some up here. Trout action has been strong in the deepest areas where canals and creeks hit the main shorelines of Tampa Bay. The very biggest trout are being caught on the redfish flats or around big oyster clumps.
Lures: The 12 Fathom buzz tail shad, killer for redfish. Trout have been preferring the 12 Fathom SlamR but will eat almost anything they see. It is going to be a great six months up this way, and the protection from the wind is also a big bonus.
