Warm waters in the gulf remain a nuisance for anglers. We are ready for cooler temperatures. Normally, the high is 81 degrees at this time. Even with shorter days, revealing less hours of sunlight, it’s not the case. This is probably one of the worst things we can have occur during these nagging Red Tide conditions. Hopefully cooler weather will blanket the state soon, helping to straighten things out. We experienced a tainted exposure at the slip where we keep our charter boat. Trying to keep live baits for future charters is next to impossible. The bloom can best be described as spotty each day and ever moving. Conditions are relevant to tide and wind. We have been making the best of it, pulling off a few decent trips. The key is to keep your eyes open while traveling offshore. We were heading out to 30 miles but noticed life on the sonar at 68 feet of water. After going for about 2 miles, we gave it a try. Our reward was a bucket of grunts, some decent mangrove snapper and a keeper grouper. We released a few large American Red Snapper. We also wrestled a large shark. With all the variables we are up against, it seemed like a positive note, since dead fish were floating in the same areas two weeks ago. If you see terns working bait fish, it’s also normally a good sign there is life below. Water conditions have started to clear up from last week’s unruly weather.
